Halloween time brings a lot of fun things, like a waxy, tri-color wad of sugar called candy corn. But music-wise it generally means nothing much more than an endless loop of ‘Monster Mash,’ the novelty hit by Bobby “Boris” Pickett, with maybe an occasional dose of Ray Parker Jr.’s ‘Ghostbusters’ thrown in. So let’s try something different. Here’s 22 rocking numbers that are at least vaguely themed for Halloween season.
We’ve got a werewolf, some superstition, a scary monster, a ghost, a couple of witches and a whole bunch of devils, two trips to hell, Frankenstein, black magic, and even a spooky creep. We’ve got howling, as well as a bad moon rising (as once memorably appearing in the cult favorite horror/comedy film An American Werewolf in London). And best of all, we’ve got my runaway pick for the all-time top Halloween tune, ‘I Put A Spell On You,’ the ominous 1956 R&B classic by the wonderfully deranged Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (plus, the eerie guitar solo in a reprised version by Creedence Clearwater Revival).
So who ya gonna call for some decent Halloween songs? Not Bobby “Boris” Pickett or Ray Parker Jr., for starters.
